Locked In The Gym For 24 Hours With Matt Morsia

Matt Morsia is no stranger to a challenge. Whether it’s taking on intense workouts, eating an insane number of calories or standing in the world’s coldest cryotherapy chamber, his 2.1 million YouTube followers are used to seeing him test himself in all sorts of situations. For one of his most recent challenges, he spent 24 hours locked inside his own home gym.

If you’re picturing a grotty gym, you’re mistaken. Matt built the gym in his back garden over lockdown, and it’s seriously impressive. Let’s be honest, this “challenge” looks more like a relaxing day-long getaway. The only thing missing from Matt’s otherwise perfect gym? Plumbing. Things could get interesting.

Always planning ahead, Matt made sure to pack in good time... so roughly 30 seconds before he was due to leave. He grabbed the essentials:

  • Blanket
  • Pillow
  • Toilet roll
  • Toothbrush
  • Deodorant
  • Snacks
  • Bacon
  • Eggs
  • Camping stove
  • Laptop
  • Big and little plate
  • Cutlery

He did remember his manners, giving viewers a tour of the gym. It’s an impressive space. Walls adorned with the Morsia logo and painted ceiling to floor with black paint, it’s a sleek environment to work out in.

It’s certainly not style over function, though — it’s got everything he needs, including a squat rack with 400kg of plates, dumbbells from 10kg to 50kg, a leg extension machine, a curved treadmill, and a cable machine.

It’s also home to his deadlift corner, which has been put to good use since the gym was built. It’s where Matt recently beat his deadlift PB. But cover your ears, because he sounds pretty happy about it.

9:02am. Set your alarm — the 24 hours start now. And to mark the start of the challenge, a spot of breakfast. Fully committed, Matt lugged a camping stove down his garden and set it up in his gym. Eggs and bacon it is.

There’s nothing better to wake to than the smell of cooking bacon. But it’s definitely better in small doses, and you don’t want it lingering all day either.

That turned out to be a problem for Matt. His gym isn’t the most well ventilated space. Maybe cooked breakfast wasn’t such a good idea. Well, with the damage done, at least Matt looked like he enjoyed his breakfast.

Harmony didn’t last too long, though, as it soon dawned on Matt he’d forgotten something important. His gym doesn’t have a toilet. Uh oh.

Workout

It would’ve been rude not to squeeze in a workout, since he had nothing better to do.

  • Seated shoulder press
  • Chest-supported lateral dumbbell raises
  • Lateral dumbbell raises
  • Incline chest press
  • Cable flys
  • Overhead cable triceps extension
  • Cable triceps pull-down

Matt didn’t deny himself any treats during the challenge. The next order of business? Papa John’s. An XXXL thin-crust margherita pizza and a tub of chocolate fudge brownie Ben & Jerry’s.

As someone who doesn’t often sit still, Matt made sure to make the most of every minute in the gym. Mealtimes were no exception. The leg extension we can get on board with — some light leg work to get the quads firing while you tuck into your pizza can’t hurt. The treadmill, however, sounds like a recipe for making the gym smell much worse than just bacon... if you know what I'm getting at.

By the looks of it, Matt would be lost without his wife, Sarah. Turns out spending all day in your gym with just your videographer for company can get boring. Luckily Sarah popped round for a visit and to bring some of the essentials that Matt forgot. Despite his extensive preparation, Matt somehow forgot dinner.

By 9:33pm, it was time for lights out. Matt tucked himself into his dinosaur bedding and went to sleep. Apart from waking up in the middle of the night to the sound of wildlife outside, Matt slept like a baby. We were surprised because it looked far from comfortable.

Take Home Message

And just like that, 24 hours later, the challenge was over. Matt’s gym was home to some funny events during that time — he’ll probably need to keep the doors open a while longer to get rid of the bacon smell.
